Stephanie Tress, cello

Steph is a founding member of the award-winning Solem Quartet, with whom she has built a reputation for presenting powerful concerts that interweave contemporary and historical works. The quartet enjoys a busy schedule around the UK and abroad: recent and upcoming engagements include Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Wilton’s Music Hall and Aldeburgh Festival, including collaborations with artists such as Mark Simpson, Ed Finnis and Ayanna Witter-Johnson. The quartet has been featured frequently on Radio 3 and Classic FM, and their debut album The Four Quarters was released in 2021 to critical acclaim.

When not playing with the quartet, Steph enjoys session work for TV and film, and occasionally freelances with ensembles such as London Contemporary Orchestra, Manchester Collective, Manchester Camerata and United Strings of Europe. She was formerly principal cello of Sinfonia Cymru.

Steph really enjoys teaching and has a small number of private pupils alongside her role at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. She studied in Bremen, Germany, and in Manchester on the Joint Course at Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music.
